ABOUT THE AREA Situated in the Côtes de Malepère, Aire d'Aigle is surrounded by the villages of Preixan, Lavalette and Montreal. The nearest place for shops and all the services is Lavalette, but perhaps Carcassonne (20 minutes) is easier with a number of shopping centers to serve all one's needs. There is a good golf course at Carcassonne, and for the more adventurous the upper Aude is excellent for canoeing. Restaurants abound in Carcassonne renowned for its Medieval castle and city walls, and is a wonderful town to walk around and visit the various sights. The Canal du Midi, built in the 1600's runs from Toulouse, via Carcassonne to Beziers and the Med, and is perfect for picnics, walks, or cycles along its shaded banks. Twenty minutes to the south is Limoux, famed for its sparkling white wine that was the inspiration for another sparkling wine - Champagne. Its medieval looking square becomes the center of one the best carnivals in this part of France and should not be missed. Further on, is Rennes Le Chateau a village made famous from numerous books about the Holy Grail, and hidden treasure troves. To the south east the Corbieres is full of castles in outlandish locations - on top of mountain tops, - such as Queribus and Peyrepertuse, with glorious views of the Pyrenees, as well as dizzying gorges - like the Gorge of Galamus. 45 minutes east is the city of Narbonne, once capital of Roman France, now a bustling city with a very Sunday and Thursday market, an impressive cathedral, an underground roman warehouse - the horreum, and close proximity to the Mediterranean with miles of sandy beaches such as Gruissan, where the film "Betty Blue" was filmed. Westward lies the Lauragais, and its a marvelous drive through sunflower and cornfields, via Montreal, Fanjeaux, to Mirepoix, with its very pretty medieval center. ACCESS There are international connections by air to both Carcassonne (20 mins) and Toulouse (80 mins) where car hire facilities are available. Other international airports are Montpellier (2 1/2 hours), Perpignan (2 1/2 hours), and Barcelona (Spain)(4 hours). There are also regular train services to the station in Carcassonne which connect into the high speed TGV rail services throughout France. From the visitor's book at Aire d'Aigle "Superb views, wonderful tranquil setting. Everyone loved the pool, table tennis and barbecue " "We all have had an absolutely fantastic time in the wonderful house, - where our every need has been catered for - we could get used to this! ...... We will return!" PHOTO ALBUM WITH ADDITIONAL PHOTOS OF HOUSE |
