Stay in this private artist's home, in the center of Fitou, famous for its wine, chateau and nearby Mediterranean beaches. The light and airy house has a secluded and private courtyard and garden, with 10th Century walls that support the Chateau and village church.
A short drive are the beaches at La Franqui, Leucate Plage, and Le Barcares, with glorious sands for regular and naturist bathing.
Nearest airports are Perpignan, Carcassonne, Barcelona, Montpellier.

ACCOMMODATION
Cailloux d'Or, is situated in one of the old streets of Fitou, behind and above an art gallery, and is in a quiet area of the village.
The house is entered via an art gallery which hosts various group and individual shows by international artists, and up stairs to a hallway with secure entry into the living area of the house.
One enters into a large living / dining / kitchen area, with French doors opening onto a sun drenched terrace. The living area has easy chairs, and there is a dining table to seat 6. The kitchen has a stove, a microwave, refrigerator, sink, dishwasher and washing machine.
Off from the living area, a corridor, has to one side the artist's studio area, that has a single bed, whilst opposite, there is a separate WC, and bathroom with bathtub with shower attachment, and wash basin
At the end of the corridor there are two double bedrooms, with windows looking out onto the village.

The terrace that is beyond the French windows of the living / dining / kitchen area, is lined by potted plants, and to onside 4 chairs, surround a table, under an old fig tree, with larger than life fig leaves!. The terrace looks down onto a sunken garden, accessed from the lower floor, with high walls - some dating from the 10th Century - with arched grottos, that are the foundations of the Chateau and Church that are above the house. The garden and terrace area are absolutely private.

FITOU AND SURROUNDING AREA
Fitou is within 5 - 10 minutes drive of beaches at La Franqui, and Leucate, and is easily accessible from the autoroute, with an exit close by. The village is set back from the main road, with a number or excellent restaurants - including the Cave d'Agnes, and Auberge de Vidal. The village has all the services from patisseries, to general stores, to cafés, pharmacy, tennis courts. At its center, above the rental Cailloux d'Or is the 10th century chateau - now a museum, and chapel, - there is also an 11th Century church. The village has numerous events throughout the year from concerts, wine festivals, antique fairs, to sardine barbecues and petanque competitions. In the surrounding hills are numerous "Capitelles" to discover - small stone structures once used by shepherds, whilst you take one of the recommended walks or mountain bike paths, or you can go to the beaches - some of the best in Europe catering for all tastes, from naturist to regular bathing, providing the venue for windsurfing, kite boarding, and sailing. Nearby too is Sigean, which has all the services, from grocery stores, bakeries, to restaurants, and cafés, and close too is an African reserve, - a drive through wild animal reserve.
The Mediterranean beaches with the closest 10 minutes away, include beaches at Port La Nouvelle, La Franqui and Le Barcares. Access is excellent as Fitou is an exit off the autoroute from Montpellier to Barcelona, which connects with the autoroute from Toulouse. The route nationale also gives direct access to the airport at Perpignan.
There is plenty to see and do - to the north is Narbonne (25 minutes) with its imposing cathedral, archbishop's palace, Roman remains as well as shops, including popular markets, including a very large Sunday market. Just to the east are more beaches, stretching from Gruissan, with its marina, wind surfing, beaches, to Narbonne Plage, and St Pierre sur Mer. Further northwards is Beziers, with old city, a large flower market, and the Feria in the Summer months.
60 minutes to the east up the Aude valley is Carcassonne one of the wonders of Medieval architecture with its splendid cité and castle, with splendid views. More magnificent castles are to be found near in the Corbieres, immediately to the east of the house, particularly at Queribus and Peyrepertuse, two stunning feats of engineering, these castles seemingly defy gravity and reason, on top of mountain peaks.
For those seeking a quieter or more meditative outing - Fontfroide, a pretty Cistercian abbey is 40 minutes drive, and for those who view on their stomach, attached is a Michelin starred restaurant. Further into the Corbieres is Lagrasse - with historic abbey, streets, with art galleries, shops, and often fairs for antiques, books, pottery or festivals for Jazz.
To the south are the Catalonian splendors of Perpignan, with the castle once home of the Kings of Majorca, a beautiful cathedral; and don't miss the cloisters at Elne - with unbelievable sculptural designs; or the pleasures of Collioure where sea and mountain tempted the artistic palate of the likes of Picasso and Malliol.

Situated: 20 minutes from Narbonne (TGV Paris). 45 minutes from Spain, 60 mins from Carcassonne. International airports: Toulouse - 120 mins, Barcelona - 135 mins, Perpignan (30 mins) & Carcassonne (60 mins) - both served by Ryan Air with flights to London and Brussels, Montpellier (65 mins).
