THE AREA
The chateau is an excellent place to start to explore the beauties of the
Dordogne. The glories of nature and history abound.
Visit the
Grottos
de Maxange, where you can see magnificent rock formations and decorations
underground. Also nearby you can visit another Lord and Lady's! chateau
- Chateau
de Losse, a
magnificent fortified castle built in the 16th century. Further on
there is the Prehistoric Museum at Les Ezyies de Tayac in an ancient
13th century castle - close to the world famous Grotte
de Lascaux with
its famous cave paintings.
Then just around the corner as it were is Sarlat la Canéda, a pretty
village with a renaissance styled bishop's residence, a lovely cathedral
with stupendous organ, the Lantern of the Dead, an unusual conical
tower, in the cemetery, the remains of the Abbey, and of cafés, shops,
restaurants, and a phenomenal market on Wednesdays and Saturdays -
excellent to see local produce - including walnuts, black truffles,
wild mushrooms, and a wide variety of cheese and ham.
To the west there is Bergerac, now with an airport catering well for
flights to England. Bergerac - with its old port, the Museum of Sacred
Art (see the strange Pierre de Lauzerte), and for those with a fascination
for
tobacco
- a Tobacco Museum (there is a large cigarette and tobacco factory
in Bergerac).
And to the north the town of Perigueux with its famous market, its
large multidomed cathedral St Front, its ancient La Cité dating from
Gallo Roman times, and the pretty medieval quarter of St Front (shops,
galleries, cafés, restaurants) with the market on Wednesday and Saturday
at the Place de la Clautre. If you want to get away from the noise
and rush of the market - go over to the Jardin Arènes - where you will
find peace and quiet in a horticutural bliss surrounded by the vestiges
of the old Gallo Roman Arena - one of the largest in Gaul.
