large village house in the quiet and pretty canal side village of Roubia,
exudes with the elegance of old France, with large rooms with marvelous
tiled floors, including a large kitchen, with door and window opening
onto an outside summer dining area under the shade of a fig tree, a few
steps away from a large swimming pool. Roubia, is on the Canal du Midi, about 20 minutes from the city of Narbonne, which is 10 minutes from Mediterranean beaches at Gruissan, and Narbonne Plage. ACCESS: International airports are at Carcassonne (35 minutes), Beziers-Cap d'Agde (40 mins), Montpellier (1 1/2 hours), Perpignan (1 hr) Toulouse (2 hours), and in Spain at Barcelona (3 hours). TGV connections can be made at Narbonne railway station (30 mins), or at Lezignan-Corbieres railway station (15 mins). DETAILS OF ACCOMMODATION Entering the house from the back (where there is ample parking spaces), the path leads down the side of a large swimming pool, which lies next to a pleasant garden area, via a large table, for dining outside, under the shade of a large fig tree. A glass panelled door opens onto a large kitchen with a table for six, as well as cooker/oven, refrigerator, and washing machine. To one side a door leads to a room with separate WC. Another door leads to the hallway and the living room, with resplendent open fireplace, marvelous tiled floors, 2 foldout couches (2 double futons), armchair, TV, and windows that look out over the front lawn, onto a quiet street. Up stairs leading off from the kitchen, are 4 large bedrooms: 2 with twin beds, 1 with double bed and single bed, and one with a double bed. Also off the upstairs landing is a bathroom, with WC, wash basin, bath with shower attachment. To oneside of the stairs is access to a large studio living area, with a large bathroom with bathtub, with shower attachment, wash basin, and WC. |

ROUBIA AND SURROUNDING AREA Roubia, is a pleasant village on the Canal du Midi, surrounded by vineyards, and is close to the River Aude, that flows from Carcassonne to the Mediterranean (at one time flowing through Narbonne). The village has a boulangerie (bakery), butcher (open 3 mornings a week), general store, post office; a green grocer, fishmonger, visit with their vans; and highly recommended restaurant/café. To the north are the hills and garrigue of the Minervois, well known for its deep red wines, and pretty villages including Minerve, that straddles two steep gorges, known for its tumultuous Cathar history. To the south, across the Aude valley, are the hills and mountains of the Corbières, with magnificent abbeys such at Fontfroide and Lagrasse, and stupendous Cathar castles that defy nature perched on perilous peaks such as Peyrepertuse and Queribus. Westward is the grand cité of Carcassonne where medieval architecture comes alive, in a way that is only seen in films (which Carcassonne has). Eastward are the bustling towns of Narbonne and Beziers, each with thriving markets (Beziers - Friday flower market, Narbonne - Sunday market) and large thunderous cathedrals; and close to are endless sandy beaches that stretch along the Languedoc Coast. Restaurants abound in the neighboring canal side villages of Paraza and Homps, as well as the city of Lezignan (where there are supermarkets). Canal boats are available for rental from Ventenac. RECOMMENDATION Hello, I have just remembered that I hadn't written to you to let you know how our stay at the Roubia House went this summer. I rented it the week of July 7 - 14, 2001. It was a perfect place for our two families to join up. We spent the days at the beaches in Sete and the nights having large dinners poolside while the kids wound down and went swimming. It was very nice to come home where we could all relax and not have to dress up for dinner. Coming from the beach in our swimsuits, we'd cook dinner and plan the next days activities. Everyone enjoyed the accommodations and the ladies who came to open and close the house were especially nice.
